WE’VE BUILT A HOUSE WITH
       LOVE AND MUSCLE

Each year since 2000 an enthusiastic group of high-school youths (and adults) from UUSG have pitched in to help build a Habitat for Humanity home.

The group is supported by the fundraising efforts of the entire congregation, including a group of fifth and sixth graders who donate the proceeds from an auction of their original artwork.

This is an ongoing project
with the kids working on
a different home every year.

2000
This year’s inaugural theme for our High School Habitat for Humanity Youth was, "We’re Building a House with Love."

I am very happy to report that the experience was quite a memorable week for all who attended. Representing UUSG in Morristown, TN, were the following youth and adults: Casey Best; Mary Gleason Best; David Coe; Sarah and Jeff Dooley; DeSean Ferrell; Jennifer Hohe; Michael Johnson; Samantha Lipman; Heather Noncek; Jordan Pierce; Heidi, Betsy, and Hal Schulman; and Benjamin and Paul Sheehan. These people gave up ten days of their summer, not only to build a house, but also to help build a community.

The feeling of being welcomed extended beyond Morristown. We had a very warm reception at both the UU Church of Lexington, KY, and the UU Church of Indianapolis, IN, where we spent one night each, on our trip to and from, respectively. However, our hosts from the Hamblen County HFH truly "rolled out the red carpet" for us all week long, commencing with an initial BBQ and lake extravaganza the day we arrived and continuing until the day we left – by meeting us at the job site to wish us a safe journey home.

While in Morristown, we worked on one primary house and two others, as time and logistics allowed. We were able to meet and work with the family whose house we were building. Due to strong dedication, commitment, and teamwork, our 16-person crew was able to start with a partially completed main floor platform on Monday AM, and by Friday PM had full construction almost complete on a 1,075-square-foot ranch. This shows what can be accomplished through goal alignment, commitment, and drive.

This past year was beyond expectations!

Thanks for believing in us!
