Weddings & Unions at UUSG
Weddings and Unions
Couples with no particular religious community, couples of differing religious backgrounds, and couples unable to be married/united in their usual church or synagogue (because of theology, divorce, sexual orientation, or other factors) frequently come to our Unitarian Universalist churches for their ceremonies.
Regarding Illinois' decision to legalize gay marriage, we are deeply pleased by this official recognition of marriage as a loving, committed relationship between two people of any gender. That God is Love is a key teaching in all religions, and it is past time we realized that love is not the exclusive property of heterosexual women and men. We applaud the Illinois Senate and House for their votes, and began celebrating the marriages of LGBTQ couples beginning in June 2014.
Our facilities are only available for ceremonies performed by our minister. We do not have adequate facilities to host a reception.
If you have never seen our building and would like to do so before proceeding with plans for a service here, you are welcome to stop in during the day when our office is open. Our office hours are generally Monday through Thursday, 9am to 2pm; however, this schedule often changes, so it’s best to call for a definite appointment. The church is of course open on Sunday mornings.
To cover our expenses and our staff's time, we charge $1,000 for the ceremony (off-site ceremonies are $500). Your fee covers the work of our minister in planning and conducting your ceremony, secretarial services to provide final copies of the ceremony and your certificate, and (for onsite weddings) use of our facilities for the rehearsal and ceremony including the Sanctuary and changing rooms if needed for the wedding/union party before the service, utilities, and custodial services before and after the rehearsal and the ceremony.
Musicians’ fees are additional for Members and non-members alike, and are arranged directly with the musicians. We’re glad to provide you with a list of the musicians who perform regularly in our church. But if you prefer to use a pianist or other musicians of your own choosing, that’s fine with us.
We require a $100 deposit before meeting with the minister.
There is no fee for services celebrated for Voting Members of the congregation or the children of Voting Members, but you must be a Voting Member at the time of your request for a service.
If you would like more information about getting married by our minister in our church or at another location, please contact our Congregational Administrator, Christine Imielski, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 630-232-2350. She can check our calendar and our minister's schedule for availability, and she will provide you with a complete list of our guidelines and requirements.
We wish you every happiness as you begin your new life together!
