Guest Worship Leader, Sophia Spiegel - "Names As Portals of Enchantment"

Names have power—they can enchant or disillusion, claim unwanted ownership or open the door to freedom. In this service, we’ll reflect on how the names we give to the sacred—whether shifting from “God” to “Cosmos,” or “prayer” to “contemplation” or “meditation”—reshape our experiences of meaning and mystery. How do our names and identities transform our understanding of ourselves and each other? Together, we’ll explore how language shapes our beliefs, our experiences, and the enchantment that lives within and beyond the words we choose.

Sophia is a lifelong Unitarian Universalist, excited to return to Geneva, IL while on a break from her studies at Yale Divinity School. Before entering divinity school, she served as Music Director at Tree of Life Lutheran Church in Northeast Minneapolis. Her earlier work focused on child welfare, including roles as a Family Support Worker with 360 Communities in Dakota County and Clinic Coordinator at the Family Enhancement Center in South Minneapolis. Outside of ministry and community care, Sophia is the founder, lead singer, and guitarist of Dilly Dally Alley, a jazz-fusion and indietronica band. She is passionate about integrating interactive performance with ritual, both within and beyond traditional church settings. She is passionate about blending interactive performance with ritual, both within and beyond traditional church spaces, often collaborating with a rotating group of artists and organizers to host unique shows and services across the midwest. Sophia’s UU upbringing in her Illinois congregation deeply shaped both her creative work and her call to ministry. In her spare time, she loves baking bread, shooting hoops, running, biking, and going on tiny adventures with friends.
