The Long Arc: Stories from UU History
Join Rev. Alan Taylor for an engaging Adult Education class on Sunday, October 5, 11:45 a.m.–1:30 p.m. in the Common Room.
Rev. Alan will share inspiring short stories from Unitarian Universalist history that help explain why we Unitarian Universalists are the way we are today. Topics include:
How Unitarian and later Universalist views became “heresies”
What made it possible for religious reform in 16th century Europe
How congregational polity, our form of governance, emerged during the Radical Reformation
How hundreds of Unitarian congregations affirming “salvation by character” have survived for 450 years in Eastern Europe
Why early New England colonists sought religious freedom for themselves but denied it to others
How American Unitarianism coalesced into a denomination to the chagrin of its founder
How Transcendentalism and the Western Conference moved many Unitarian congregations away from Christianity—How we become a covenantal tradition rather than a creedal one
Why Universalism spread so quickly and then declined after the Civil War
What catalyzed the merger of the Unitarians and Universalists
If time allows, Rev. Alan will also share how UUSG fits into the story of the Western Conference, which shaped our tradition on an ethical—not creedal—foundation. A light lunch will be provided. Please sign up at uusg.org/longarc so we know how many to plan for. More Adult Education opportunities will be coming soon. If you have particular interests, contact Rev. Alan at alan@uusg.org.
