Transcendentalism Class
UU Society of Geneva
Adult Education Course: Transcendentalism
Join Rev. Alan for a six-session exploration of Transcendentalism, an influential religious reform movement that shaped our Unitarian Universalist faith tradition and transformed how our culture talks about spirituality. Referred to as βthe Grandchildren of the Revolution,β these were reform-minded ministers and activists whose spiritual, moral, and political commitments fueled movements for racial, gender, social, and environmental justice. We will explore the tensions between the rise of individualism with the gifts of deepening in a community that collectively embodies its commitments. One session will focus on Rev. Augustus Conant and Rev. Thomas Starr King who brought Transcendentalism to the west. These classes will include small group conversations to encourage participation and engagement with this rich material that invites spiritual growth, a deeper understanding of our faith tradition, and a shared journey to reflect on how we embody our Covenant, which itself has long been regarded as a clear articulation of the Transcendentalist ideals.
Classes will be held on the following Thursdays from 7-8:30pm in the UUSG Common Room and On Zoom.
