Geneva’s Civil War Soldier-Chaplain Presentation

UU Society of Geneva

The Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva (UUSG) presents a history on the life of its founder as part of its 175th anniversary celebration.

The founding minister of the oldest church in Geneva, Augustus Conant, served in the 19th Illinois regiment from 1861-1863.  Conant, a devoted pacifist, chose to join the Union army because he believed slavery was an evil far greater than war.

UUSG member Kevin O’Neill, who has researched Conant’s service as an army chaplain and medic, will describe the challenges, friends and foes that made the life of Geneva’s native son so extraordinary. Civil War period music and songs will be included, performed live. Stay after the presentation for Q&A and refreshments.

The program will take place Sunday, February 26, 2017 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, located at the corner of 2nd and James Streets in Geneva. Questions may be directed to Kathy Cornell, 175th Anniversary Chair, at 175@uusg.org
